How Is Botox® Used?

Botox® gained popularity as a cosmetic solution to reduce the appearance of wrinkles on the forehead and around the eyes. A serum derived from the botulinum bacteria is injected in minute amounts to temporarily paralyze the muscles just beneath the skin. The injections used can minimize muscle activity for a limited time to create a noticeable change in the fine lines occurring on an individual’s face. The f muscles underneath the skin of the face which can cause the skin to crease and fold are targeted with the Botox® injections.

What should I expect from treatment?

In most cases, a Botox® treatment only takes between 10 and 20 minutes. The doctor will talk to the patient about his or her goals and examine the face to see where the injections will be most effective. Very little downtime is required for Botox® and the treatment can usually be performed during a lunch hour. Within 24 to 48 hours, results should be visible and they should last for approximately four months. The vast majority of patients feel no side effects from Botox® treatment and can resume their normal routines immediately afterward. After treatment, avoid sun exposure and don't rub the injection site after treatment. If desired, you can cover up any mild skin redness with cosmetics.

How Long Does Botox® Last?

The longevity of Botox® will depend on upon the patient. While each person is unique, the majority of patients enjoy between 3-6 months of wrinkle correction from a Botox® treatment. If you get follow-up treatments on a regular basis, it may allow you to extend the time between treatments since the wrinkles are never allowed to re-form.
