Fillers Q & A
What Are Fillers?
Fillers are injectables used in cosmetic procedures to add volume to certain areas of the body where the skin has lost its elasticity and hollow areas have started to form. Injectable fillers are used to plump up narrowing lips, add volume to cheeks and around the eyes, and help add contour and shape to a person’s features. There are many different types of commercial fillers available. Doctors can also use a person’s own tissue and fat stores as potential fillers. Injectable fillers can produce results lasting anywhere from three months to a year, depending on the materials used.
Under What Circumstances Are They Used?
Fillers can be used under many different circumstances. Many people find that injectable fillers work well to reduce signs of aging. Fillers can smooth wrinkles and lines that form around the eyes, nose and mouth as well as across the forehead. Fillers can also be used to add volume to the cheeks and lips when other tissues have broken down and the skin begins to become loose or saggy. Doctors are continuing to discover new ways that fillers can both enhance a person’s appearance and correct structural abnormalities.
What Are Fillers Made Of?
Many fillers contain collagen and other substances that are similar in composition. Collagen is produced by the body, but production decreases as a person ages. Collagen-based fillers are easily tolerated by the body and can provide satisfactory results for several months. The serum paralyzes and relaxes the muscles, smoothing out and adding volume to the areas where it is injected. Fillers can be created using a person’s own tissues if they so choose. These types of fillers do not last as long and may not produce the same results as collagen-based fillers, but they do offer positive results.
